Understanding Kenya's Competency Based Education
Kenya's Competency Based Education (CBE) curriculum — formerly called CBC — replaced the old 8-4-4 system. Instead of percentage grades, CBE uses four proficiency levels to assess how well a learner has mastered each competency:
At senior school level, learners choose from three distinct pathways. Each pathway has approved three-subject combinations that determine which university courses and career programmes a student can access.
🔬 STEM
Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics. Leads to medicine, engineering, computing, architecture, and sciences.
🎨 Arts & Sports Science
Creative arts, performing arts, visual design, and sports science. Leads to creative industries, media, and sports careers.
🌐 Social Sciences
Humanities, business studies, and social sciences. Leads to law, governance, education, business, and social work.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is CBC / CBE in Kenya?
CBC (Competency Based Curriculum), now officially called CBE (Competency Based Education), is Kenya's current school curriculum introduced to replace the 8-4-4 system. It assesses learners using four proficiency levels — EE, ME, AE, BE — instead of percentage scores. At senior school level, students choose from STEM, Arts & Sports Science, or Social Sciences pathways.
How do I choose CBC subject combinations?
Kenya's CBC curriculum has 571 approved three-subject combinations, each with an official Ministry of Education (MoE) code. Use Tathmini's free Subject Combination Checker to verify whether your chosen subjects form an approved combination, get the MoE code, and find schools that offer it.
Which CBC pathway should my child choose?
The right pathway depends on the student's interests, strengths, and career goals. STEM is ideal for those interested in sciences, technology, or engineering. Arts & Sports Science suits creative or athletic learners. Social Sciences fits those interested in business, law, humanities, or governance. Use Tathmini's free Pathway Finder to explore each pathway's subjects, careers, and university courses.
Is Tathmini free to use?
Yes. The core tools — Pathway Finder, School Finder, Combination Checker, Career Explorer, and Quick Report Card Generator — are completely free with no account required. School accounts unlock additional features including student analytics, RIASEC career assessments, longitudinal tracking, and bulk report card generation.
